Share Peace Art Contest

This is our 2nd Annual Peace Poster Contest through our local Lions Club. It is a global contest that starts within the school. This years theme is Share Peace. Students had to design and create an original image that represents the theme. The 1st place winners went on to the second round of competition. Emory Hunnicutt and Boryan Markulis were voted by AMS staff and students the 1st place winners and Boyan won 2nd among the 20+ other students in central to western North Carolina. Picasso Portraits Fall 2015

A study of Picasso, Cubism, profile and portrait facial features and different oil pastel techniques. I always love how different these turn out.

Murray Shaped Canvas

Shaped Canvas' lesson was inspired by Art Mash. We viewed this great Art 21 video on Elizabeth Murray after the students read a little biography about the artist. Their first question undoubtedly is, "Is she still alive?". They are surprised to discover she was an older artist and find her style very unique and interesting. This group of 8th graders were challenged to create art that reflects a piece of themselves. It was very interesting to read the description and reasoning behind their artwork. Their inspiration came from a variety of places such as music, harmony in life's balance, internal flame/power, dreams and much more. Here are some samples from the Fall semester.

6th One Point Perspective

6th grade studied the illusion of one point perspective. Then made geometric and organic shapes, shapes coming out of other shapes, floating shapes, and their own creative shapes all coming from one vanishing point. They used value with colored pencils to add color. Very cool!

LEAF in Schools and Streets artist Cedric Watson

7th grade has a visitor! We studied artist Wassily Kandinsky and how he used music to inform his paintings, then Cedric Watson form Louisville gave the students history of the culture and Creole music, played two different tempos of music, then played continuously while the students painted. This was a one day exploratory project that was very successful and we hope to have Cedric back next year!

American's Who Tell the Truth

7th Grade kicked off the year with a portrait drawing and writing piece of a Local Courageous Citizen who has inspired them in some way. Students selected parents, teachers, coaches, restaurant owners and historical figures that have stood up for what they believe in. Students came to the show and were able to talk to Shetterly about his work and he took the time to reflect on their work. The results where amazing! Here are just a few pictures.

Life Size Tape Sculpture

Our 7th graders just finished a 3 week project that required research, writing, and a detailed portrait drawing which are hung at the YMI Center until Nov. 6, 2015. So to give them a little break, we did life size sculptures out of packing tape! Yes, that's right! Packing Tape. We were inspired by the work of George Segal. They worked in teams to create a pose the was symbolic. Some chose characters from Dr. Who, gamers, playful poses, Statue of Liberty, and others. These were really fun! I love how the groups worked collaboratively to make a successful piece. THIS was a great resource.
